Kevin Burch wanted to be around animals so much that when he was 7 years old he saddled horses for free so special-needs children could ride. Now, several volunteer jobs later, the TCC spring 2009 graduate is working in his third paid job doing what he loves.
Not impressed? Then, consider that he just turned 18 in April and is one of four Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society members recently named Texas Coca-Cola scholars. In addition to receiving a $1,000 scholarship, Burch earned a full scholarship to The University of Texas at Arlington. He plans to attend veterinary school at Texas A&M University after earning his four-year degree.
“I’ve been around animals my whole life and have always wanted to help them,” he said. “I never had a fear of animals…and have always bonded with them.”
In addition to working with animals as a veterinarian technician trainee, Burch this summer was among 50 students who attended the five-day Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria so he could “broaden his understanding and perspectives regarding global citizenship and international affairs.”
He credits his early introduction to college, while still being home-schooled as a 15-year-old, for directing his focus, which was further impacted by his participation in PTK.
“Being around people with like-minded goals kept me more focused on what I needed to do as a student,” Burch said. “It was a good leadership experience since I plan to own my own business.”
