TCC’s award-winning weekly student newspaper, The Collegian, should top the reading list of every TCC student and employee. Twelve members of The Collegian staff last spring beat larger universities to win more than 20 awards in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition.
“The award inspired me to improve my skills even further,” said editor-in-chief Steve Knight, a returning award-winning staffer and former band director. “It erased any doubts I had about becoming a journalist after teaching for so long.”
The Collegian was the Newspaper Division 2 Sweepstakes winner for earning the most points in individual awards. Staff also won first place in Overall Excellence, first place in Page One Design for the April 16, 2008, issue, and honorable mention in General Web Site Excellence.
Individual first-place recognition was awarded in the categories of Information Graphic, Page One Design, Illustration, Picture Story and Sports Feature Photo. Second-place awards were earned in Feature Page Design, Feature Story and Critic Review, and third-place recognition was received for Photo Illustration, Sports Column and Sports Page Design. Additionally, honorable mention was awarded in General Column and Single Subject Presentation.
On-Site awards were earned for third place in Editorial Writing and Feature Writing and honorable mention in Print Sports Writing, Print News Writing and Two-Person Photo Essay.
Faculty sponsors during the calendar year 2008 award period were Assistant Journalism Professor Eddye Gallagher, Journalism Instructor Chris Whitley and Journalism Instructor Diane Turner, now deceased.
