Reading and Writing Developmental Studies

Reading, Writing and Integrated Reading and Writing Developmental Studies are designed for students who did not meet the minimum requirements of the TSI Assessment.

Courses

RDNG 0361 Reading Techniques I

Emphasizes the improvement of basic reading skills through:

  • Individualized development of comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Study skills
  • Critical reasoning
  • Relationships among ideas in written material

Placement:  Based on a reading score of 310-348 on TSI Assessment (as of August 26, 2013)

 

ENGL 0324 Writing Techniques I

Emphasizes basic writing and focuses on the fundamental writing skills such as:

  • Grammar
  • Usage
  • Mechanics
  • Sentence structure
  • Use of Standard English

Students will generate ideas and organize paragraphs and essays with an emphasis on revision.

This course is also appropriate for anyone who wishes to enhance his or her real-life writing skills.

Placement:  Based on a score of 0-4 on the essay and a score of 350-359 on sentence skills on the TSI Assessment (as of August 26, 2013)

 

INRW 0399 Integrated Reading and Writing

Combines 3-hour lecture/1-hour lab in one performance-based course designed to develop students' critical reading and academic writing skills.

If successfully completed with a C or better, this course fulfills TSI requirements for reading and writing.

Placement based on:

  • Successful completion in RDNG 0361
    or
  • Successful completion in ENGL 0324
    or
  • Reading score of 349-350 on the TSI Assessment (as of August 26, 2013)
    or
  • Score of 4 on the essay and score of 360-362 on sentence skills
