Guidelines for Field Observations

  • Be on time. If late or ill, contact the school or organization and the instructor for the course. 
  • Check in at building office. Inquire about parking and visitation policies.
  • Meet the teacher and other personnel related to the assignment.
  • Assist teacher only as requested. You may ask if he/she needs help with anything.
  • Do not give unsolicited advice to teachers.
  • Study the methods of classroom management that are in use. Analyze why some strategies work and some do not.
  • Observe the classroom environment, arrangement, order, etc. Study the relationship between these factors.
  • Confer regularly with your college instructor.
  • Practice professional behavior in dress, relations with students, loyalty to TCC, loyalty to your assigned school or organization, and loyalty to the education profession.  
  • Practice ethical behavior including confidentiality and avoiding gossip.
  • Be cautious about discussing your personal life with students.
