Nick Smith's a gifted motivator. A born leader. That was clear at Eastern Hills High School where his popularity soared. It's clear now at Trinity River Campus where he's part of the All-Star Leadership Program.
"I'm a people person," he explained. Smith said he faced "a lot of challenges growing up" and describes himself as "approachable...I'm a hard worker with a have-fun attitude as long as the mission is accomplished." Most of all, he said, "I love to serve."
Example: His marketing brainstorm last summer - an idea for an enrollment fair to help boost awareness of and interest in the new TR Campus. The idea led to the Aug. 8 "Rock 'n' Enroll" event that drew hundreds of participants as TR geared for the launch of its first semester.
That's an All-Star at work, said Michael Baumgardner, TR's director of Student Development Services. Exceptional students make up the program that's aimed at developing their leadership skills. Smith's a prime example.
Born in North Carolina, "I was moved around a lot," living in California before domestic difficulties led his family to relatives in Fort Worth. At Eastern Hills, he distinguished himself in student activities and served as captain of the football and baseball teams.
His hero is his mom. "She has worked so hard to push me where I am and where I'm headed." That will be a baccalaureate degree then a law degree, he said. And maybe a new home - the White House, as President. "That's my biggest goal," he said. Politics may be a natural path for him. "I'm able to work with anyone."
