Author to revisit
Jaspar dragging
The author of a book on a Jasper, Texas, tragedy will visit NE Campus
during Black History Month.
Joyce King, the author of the book Hate Crimes: The Dragging in Jasper,
will speak Wednesday Feb. 11, at 11:15 a.m. in the NSTU Center Corner.
The former CBS Radio news anchor/reporter will talk about the dragging
death of a black man in Jasper.
Having racial issues herself, King said she was inspired by friends
and the notes about the story. Therefore, she resigned from CBS and
moved to Jasper to cover what she described as the brutal racist murder.
King traveled to Huffle Creek and walked where the man was dragged,
an experience she said instantly changed her perspective.
After a month, the trial was over and a lot of the people there were
stunned, King observed.
Having lived there a month to research about the people and what they
are like without a trial and television cameras, she found t the people
very suspicious but friendly. Hate Crime describes her experiences.
“The message is more important than the messenger,” she
said.
Lunch will be served. To make a reservation, call 817-515-6644.
