Today-Feb. 13 The third annual Joyce Elaine Grant Photography Exhibition is on display in the Texas Woman’s University Fine Arts Galleries from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and on weekends by appointment only. A closing reception Feb. 12 6-8 p.m. will honor the artist. Heautoscopy, works by Victoria Hirt, last year’s solo exhibition winner, is also on view. Today-Feb. 22 The Jubilee Theatre is presenting Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting by Ed Schmidt. The story focuses on Branch Rickey, manager of the famed Brooklyn Dodgers in the late 1940s, as he stands ready to sign Jackie Robinson. He calls together a summit meeting with help from the greatest black men of the day, and they consider politics and philosophies and how their influence might keep peace at this volatile shift in culture. Today-May 2 The Amon Carter Museum is displaying Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyp-ing Fremont’s Last Expedition Through the Rockies. This exhibition brings together American history and the history of photography. The exhibit features more than 100 daguerreotypes by photographer Robert Shlaer, who from 1994-98 retraced the route of explorer John C. Fremont. Fremont led an expedition from Missouri to California in an attempt to locate a route for the proposed transcontinental railway. The museum is closed Mondays. Feb.13-15 The Fort Worth Dallas Ballet will present Three of Hearts, a Valentine celebration with three ballets in one performance at Bass Performance Hall. Feb. 20-21 Professional dancers from across the United States will present an evening of modern dance at 8 p.m. in the Denton Center for Visual Arts. Performers include Lacy & Shade, Sarah Gamblin, John Dixon, Laura Shandelmeier and Colleen Thomas. They will offer solos and duets to illustrate various moods and ideas. Co-sponsored by the TWU dance department and the Denton Arts Council, performances will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Feb. 20-March 27 Shanghai Moon by Charles Busch opens at Pocket Sandwich Theatre. Shanghai Moon is a tongue-in-cheek look at the 1930s oriental movie melodramas. It involves the visit by a notorious young beauty to Shanghai, where she becomes involved in a steamy affair with a mysterious warlord and ensnared in an exotic world of opium addiction, drug smuggling and white slavery. Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets, ranging from $8-$16 are available at 214-821-1860.
Feb. 27-29 Agua, Azucarillos y Aguardiente by Frederico Chueca will be presented by the TCU Opera Studio with the TCU Symphony Orchestra. The performance features excerpts from Zarzuela performed by soprano Martha Guitérrez. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in Ed Landreth Auditorium on University Drive.
