NW highlights black artist
in February gallery exhibit
Drawing and painting have been a life-long endeavor
for the artist whose one-person exhibit is helping NW Campus celebrate
Black History Month.
Born in Henderson, Texas, Lenard Brown developed an interest in art
at a young age and continued into his adulthood.
“Everybody draws as a kid, but I was better than most,”
he said.
Brown pursued his ambition and earned an Associate in Arts degree at
Lon Morris College in 1990, went on to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts
at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi in 1993 and his master’s
at Ohio State University in 1997.
Eduardo Aguilar, art department chair, extended an invitation last year
to Brown to show his work at the Lakeview Gallery on NW Campus.
Brown has been showing his artwork professionally for about 10 years
and frequently exhibits his work at university galleries and fine arts
galleries. His works are also in private collections around the country.
The recipient of several awards for his work, Brown’s most recent
honors were received at the McAllen International Museum in 2002, where
he won Best of Show during Art on the Move: The Automobile show in McAllen.
Brown is currently an assistant professor of printmaking, painting and
drawing at the University of Texas Pan American. He also serves as the
area coordinator for the undergraduate painting and drawing program
and as the graduate adviser for the M.F.A. program.
The free exhibit will run until Saturday, Feb. 21. The gallery is open
during normal school hours.
