Renaissance fairs transform
Texas into medieval setting

When most students hear Spring Break, they generally think of parties, tiny bathing suits and exotic island locations.
The majority, however, would not think of setting up a tent and strapping on a broadsword.
Yet that is exactly what a small minority of students plan to do this semester.
Their destination is Excalibur Fantasy Faire located on the outskirts of Austin in a small town called Smithville.
Excalibur is an annual event based on themes related to those found in fantasy games, novels and movies.
Much like the local Scarborough Faire, Excalibur recreates a small village set in the time period of the Renaissance.
Attending students can expect to see elaborate costumes made of armour, leather and chainmail. Also in attendance will be a host of fantasy figures such as elves, ogres, dwarves, fairies and trolls.
During the fair, music, dance and stunt-filled productions such as jousting tournaments will entertain visitors.
Visitors can either purchase or rent costumes from one of the many costume shops located inside the fair grounds and attend several of the more than 50 vendor booths to purchase various wares and try the cuisine from the days of yore.
As the sun sets, the Excalibur campgrounds come alive with rhythmic drum beats, bonfires and plenty of spirits.
It should also be known that the general campgrounds can become slightly rowdy and may not be the best environment for children.
Fire–breathing, cursing, alcohol and occasional nudity can be commonplace as campers wander the grounds from one party to the next.
If it is a party that students are seeking, Excalibur campgrounds may be the place for the adventurous spring breaker.
The moods are generally good though there is the possibility of minor skirmishes anytime alcohol is involved.
For those seeking a more family-friendly environment, Smithville offers a number of RV campgrounds and hotels.
But like Halloween, Excalibur is another reason to take on a fantasy persona and leave the realities of life behind, either real or imagined.
The Excalibur Fantasy Faire is held every weekend starting March 13 through April 4 whether it rains or shines.
