Today-April 18 Bessie Smith: Empress of the Blues fills Jubilee Theatre
with vibrating music. A legend who dominated her art in her era, Bessie
Smith brought the blues into mainstream culture, resuscitated the recording
industry and rode the crest as the highest-paid vocalist and music
artist among blacks of her day. Shows are 8:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday
with 3:15 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $16-$25

Today-April 18 The Kimbell Art Museum is exhibiting The Drawings of
Francois Boucher (1703-1770) and Boucher’s Mythological Paintings.

Today-May 2 The Amon Carter Museum presents Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping
Fremont’s Last Expedition Through the Rockies. This exhibition
brings together American history and the history of photography.
Today-May 9 The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History has opened
a new exhibit: Play it by Ear. This exhibit invites visitors to touch,
hear and play with sound art. Admission to the exhibit is included

Today-May 9 Picasso: The Cubist Portraits of Fernande Olivier is on
exhibit at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. Although most famous
as a painter, Picasso was one of the 20th century’s most ground-breaking
sculptors, greatly influencing the evolution of sculptural thought.
Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for students and free
for members and children under 12.
Today-May 31 The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History presents
Whodunit? The interactive exhibit explores scientific methods and technologies
used to solve crimes, including DNA profiling, fingerprinting, firearm
identification, forensic anthropology, pathology, entomology, odontology,
evidence collection and trace evidence. Admission to the exhibit is
included with regular admission. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for
children (3-12) and seniors (60+). Exhibit hours are Monday-Thursday

March 29-April 19 Venetian Gardens, an art exhibit by Julie Lazarus,
opens on South Campus in the Carillon Gallery. The exhibit features
drawings, paintings and sculptures. A reception with the artist will
be April 1, 6-8 p.m. The gallery is open 1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
April 2 Notorious Psycho Birds in the North by Northwest Rear Window
opens at Pocket Sandwich Theater. The popcorn-tossing comedy spoof
takes an affectionate poke at some of Alfred Hitchcock’s most

April 6-11 Casa Manana’s Broadway at the Bass brings Fame, the
Musical to the Bass Performance Hall. The red-hot musical follows the
quest of 24 students as they search for that elusive goal of fame while
attending New York’s High School of Performing Arts. Tickets

April 7 The Sammons Center for the Arts will present Voice—The
First Jazz Instrument, an evening of live jazz. The first set, starting
at 7:30 p.m., features The UNT Singers. In the second set, vocalist
Peggy Lauren joins The Bill Bohr Band for Straight Ahead Jazz. The
$25 tickets also include appetizers, drinks and valet parking. Doors

Center. The roof-raising, sexy musical illustrates the career of an

April 12 Brett Fiedler, NE Campus student, will present a free bass
guitar recital at 7:30 p.m. in the NFAB Theatre.
April 13 The NW Campus music department presents Richard Powell and
Phase Two Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall, WFAB 1105. Performers
include Powell, piano; Lou Carfa, bass; Brent Dacus, drums. The concert
will feature special guest artist Tom Burchill, jazz guitarist.
April 14 Women in New Roles from all four campuses will sponsor the
WINR Jazzzzz Concert. Performers include the South Campus Jazz Combo,
TCC Dancers and WINR students from NE, NW, South and SE campuses. The
free concert is 7:30 p.m. in the South Campus Recital Hall.
April 15-17 Artisan Center Theater in North Hills Mall presents 1-800
4-ADVICE. The special event comedy features Bernice Bower, who for
over 50 years has been helping the world—one person at a time.
