Creative writers can attend the NE Campus English department’s poetry-writing workshop, Monday, April 5, noon-2 p.m. in NTAB 2203c.
Rebecca Balcarcel and Etheredge Cuyler of the English faculty will lead the workshop, and student activities will provide pizza and drinks.
The daughter of a Guatemalan father and Anglo mother, Balcarcel often writes of her bi-cultural upbringing. She lives with her husband and twin sons, 6, and their brother, 8.
Balcarcel says she writes at sandboxes, swing sets or her desk in the middle of the night.
As a student at Bennington, Balcarcel received the Jane Kenyon Poetry prize. Ferry Crossing, her collection of poems, was published by the UNT Trilobite Press in 2002.
A former TCC student, her first poem “Umbraphobia” was published in the first edition of Under the Clock Tower, the NE Campus literary journal. Balcarcel has led workshops and lectured on poetry around the state.
Balcarcel’s work has appeared in over 20 journals and magazines, including 5AM, Concho River Review, Clockwatch Review and South Dakota Review. She received her MFA from Bennington College in 2002.
Etheredge teaches creative writing and literature. The published author and poet has taught at TCC for more than 30 years old.
More importantly to Etheredge, she has served as a mentor to several student writers during her tenure at TCC. Former students have won awards, published works and written plays and screenplays. Many credit her with their successes.
The assistant professor received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Christian University.
To register for the workshop, contact Rita Wisdom in the Writing Center, NACB 1114.
