Texas Independence Day

Longhorns, gun slingers, musicians celebrate Texas

Children get a close-up look at an armadillo, a prime example of Texas wildlife, during the Texas Independence Day celebration March 1 in the Stockyard Station.
Festivities included armadillo races, hayrides, storytelling, blacksmith demonstrations and a gunfighter reenactment. The event recognized the March 2, 1836, adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Left: Members of the North Texas Dancers entertain the crowds with western square dancing. Wichita Bob told stories, and children read cowboy poetry from the Red Steagall poetry contest.

Young Texans could try their hands at catching cattle Texas style .Left: A western maiden plays a game of real or mannequin with festival visitors. Historical figures Sam Houston and James Bowie strolled the area.
