New money man appointed to district

Rudy Gonzales has been appointed vice chancellor for financial services for the Tarrant County College District.

With 28 years of experience in community college administration, Gonzales started his new job in January.

"This was an opportunity to work for a larger college system," he said.

His duties will include analyzing financial records to forecast future financial positions and budget requirements, as well as determining when money goes out and putting what comes in from tuition, property taxes, etc. to the best use.

"I like lots of challenge in my job, and new things interest me," he said.

Gonzales comes from San Jacinto College District in Pasadena, where he had worked since 1997.

Gonzales earned a bachelor's degree at Texas A&I University in 1971 and a master's degree from Sul Ross University in 1976.

His longest tenure was with Southwest Texas Junior College, where he worked for 14 years.

Gonzales explained that although he has worked for other multi-campus colleges, TCC is bigger and, therefore, presents more of a challenge.

Also among his duties is evaluating the need for procurement of funds and the investment of surplus.

With the state's cutting funds to community colleges, Gonzales is confident that the goals of TCC currently underway will succeed.

"I wanted to come into this new job on the ground floor and help with TCC's vision and goals," he said.

Gonzales believes that TCC is moving forward rapidly, and the challenge is going to be keeping up the pace.

Announcing the appointment, Chancellor Leonardo de la Garza said, "We are delighted that Mr. Gonzales has chosen to join the Tarrant County College family. He brings to the position a wealth of experience."
