Students faced each other across a green battlefield
as they competed to win the Union for Cultural Diversity's pool
tournament.
The pool tournament was a fund-raiser for the club,
and Blockbuster, Chili's and an Arlington Middle-Eastern restaurant
donated prizes.
Cash prizes were also up for grabs.
UCD sold food outside the tournament, raising additional
funds and luring students to their tournament.
All of the participants also received free pizza.
Competitors were randomly assigned partners and
played best-out-of-three games to determine who ascended to the
next round.
The 14 original competitors were finally whittled
down to the final match between Jeremy Martin and Dominic Yates.
Yates had dislocated his arm snowboarding prior
to the tournament when the Metroplex was sheathed in ice.
"I play [at the NE Student Center] every day,"
he said.
"I was talked into competing," he said.
Triumphing over his adversity, Yates beat Martin
and won the competition.
"Although not enough people competed in the
tournament to raise significant funds, we are glad for the opportunity
it gave us to be visible on campus," Kristin Creech, UCD treasurer,
said.
The Union for Cultural Diversity also sponsored
a religious panel, consisting of Islamic and Christian teachers,
community leaders and students Friday to address questions and correct
misconceptions.
"The Union for Cultural Diversity is for any
student interested in other cultures and who wants to make new friends,"
Dena Qaddura, vice president of UCD, said.
The club promotes social and cultural awareness.
