Gwyneth winneth, but not for a View
by Nick Nance, Managing Editor
A rule exists with most movies, no
matter the actors: if the story is ridiculous, boring or just plain
stupid, the movie falls flat.
Another
movie, View from the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow, has done just that.
A young woman from a poor home, Donna (Paltrow) is faced with staying
in her home town or getting out to see the world. She is forced to face
several obstacles before she can move on. Her attempt to run off with
her high school boyfriend fails because he chooses to take someone else.
He bases his decision on Donna's being a plain girl. Donna strives to
prove him and everyone else wrong.
A trip to the local airport lands her a job as a flight attendant. While
working for the air line, she hooks up with a cheap and superficial
woman with nothing to offer but her body (Married with Children star
Christina Applegate).
Donna and fellow co-workers visit a job fair, where the best airline
in the world is hiring flight attendants.
Donna succeeds during both training and work. During training All-Pro
flight attendant Candice Bergen and a Nazi cross-eyed teacher, Mike
Meyers, take her under their wings.
As predicted, Donna meets her love interest played by actor Mark Ruffalo.
She is then faced with the life-altering decision of choosing her career
or her job as a flight attendant.
Her decision is the big twist to the story. View from the Top is predictable
and often times boring. And as no big surprise, most of the funny parts
of the movie are shown for the previews.
Paltrow seems to play the same role as in movies past.
View from the Top would lack comedy without funny man Mike Meyers.
Perhaps, movie goers should save money and wait until this movie is
available for rent.
