Crowds of students flocked the South Campus student activities patio
at a spring event Wednesday.
Spring Fling, an event to expose students to clubs and
organizations on campus, helped students learn how to get involved with
social groups
and service organizations.
The event was complete with live music from 106.1 KISS
FM and food.
Student Government Association along with Latino Student
Union sponsored the event.
SGA, a student-led organization, acts as a liaison for
the students to the faculty. The faculty and students use this body to
receive feedback
from each other.
SGA relays ideas and complaints to staff and faculty on
how to make the school better, such as Spring Fling.
“
The purpose of Spring Fling was to help student organizations to advertise
and let themselves be more visible,” Brandy McDaniel, SGA president,
said.
According to McDaniel, one of the hardest things for the
clubs to do is advertise and get themselves known to other students.
One of the clubs on campus is the Optimist Club.
The Optimist Club, an international organization with
groups in the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and soon Mexico is
dedicated to mentoring
children through various projects.
The South Campus division of the club likes to take TCC
students to area schools and other facilities to help tutor and mentor
young students.
Carolyn Riddell, South Optimist Club president, the clubs
focus is building leadership skills and character in the students and
volunteers.
“
We are always looking for new and willing volunteers to help,” she
said.
Jon Erslyn, vice president of Christian Student Ministries,
said he hoped the Spring Fling will make other students become interested
in becoming
a part of CSM.
Student chairs for the event were Anthony Fletes and Anel
Saldivar.
