Collegian cited
for sweepstakes
in competition

The Collegian took Sweepstakes during the Texas Intercollegiate Press
Association (TIPA) in Austin the first weekend in April.
Sweepstakes is given to the school in each division receiving
the highest number of points based on individual awards in its division.
In Division 2, the Collegian competed against schools
such as UT-Tyler, San Antonio College, UT-Dallas, UT-El Paso and UT-Pan
American.
Division 2 is made up of larger two-year schools and four-year
schools with larger enrollment and weekly newspapers.
Division 1 is comprised of large four-year schools that
publish daily such as the University of Texas, UTA, NTSU, TSU, Texas
A&M, TCU and
SMU.
The Collegian also won second place in the Overall Excellence
category, in which three back-to-back issues were submitted and graded
for general
quality and excellence.
Eddye Gallagher, director of student publications, and
Diane Turner, assistant director, accompanied eight students to the competition.
Gallagher
is vice-president
of the faculty organization.
Awards were given for work published in the newspaper
from last spring and this fall.
Former Collegian cartoonist Austin Callaway won first
place in cartoon for his entry Iraqi Flag.
Former photo editor Jamie Beck won first place in feature
photo for Fairy Artisan and second place in illustration for Hackers
Heaven.
Keith Ludwick, current Collegian photo editor, won second
place in feature photo for Children Get Close Up, second place in news
photo for A Hand
in Need, honorable
mention for sports action photo and first place for sports feature photo.
Production assistant Chris Ryan won second place for his
information graphic, Carbon Dioxide.
Managing editor Diana De Leon won first place in feature
story for South Student Faces Success Despite Abusive Background about
Alice Eldridge
and third place
in series for Excellence in Teaching about the TCC Chancellor’s
Award winners.
Connie Yu, ex-Collegian managing editor, won second place
in feature
story for Student’s Endometriosis, and second place as a part of
a group including Brian Shults, Meredith Waits and Nick Nance, who wrote
a series on growth around
each campus.
Editor-in-chief Rawly Bransom was elected co-vice president
of TIPA for the 2004-2005 year.
As a staff, the Collegian also won first place for its
back-to-school edition, first place in picture page design, second place
in feature
page design
and third place in both opinion page design and sports page design.
