Campus cancels classes
in France
France will have to wait till
next year for students in Photography in France and Art in Paris, due
to the war and ill attitudes toward Americans.
The trip was canceled although both classes
were full.
Many students were disappointed but not surprised with the decision.
"I think there was relief for the most part," Martha Gordon,
chair of the art department and assistant professor of art, said.
"We are already looking at next year, and the war will be over
and things should be back to normal," she said.
Gordon explained that attitudes toward Americans are not good for concentrating
on education right now.
Gordon said one student who was to meet the class in France had a bad
weekend in Paris recently.
The student was yelled and cursed at, and rocks were thrown at her group,
Gordon said.
"The canceling was strictly because of the situation," she
said. "It was before the budget crunch."
Gordon explained that this year would have been the fifth year for Art
in Paris.
Also affected were photography workshops that were to be centered on
private estates in central France.
Week one was to be spent in a 19th century farmhouse and week two in
an 18th century manor house.
The course plan called for students to take photographs in the surrounding
countryside and in small towns and villages.
The art department plans to reschedule the programs next year if the
political climate has improved.
