Mini course off to mountains
Students can earn college
credit while exploring state and national parks throughout Southwestern
United States.
South
Campus is offering a Grand Teton/Yellowstone mini-course July 12-31
for students who want an adventure.
"It's a unique trip, and a unique way for students to earn credit,"
Weldon Reed, associate professor of English, said.
Reed has participated in course trips to various parts of the country
for many years.
"I wouldn't recommend this trip for someone extremely overweight
or out of shape, but we're not insisting on Amazons and Tarzans,"
he said.
The course curriculum includes visits to sites in several states.
Students will tour Capulin Volcano, Arches National Park, Dinosaur National
Monument, Fossil Butte and Gros Ventre Landslide and take a river raft
trip.
Students who pass the course will earn eight hours of transferable college
credit including four hours for GEOL 2462 (Geology of the Southwestern
United States), three hours for ENGL 2332 or 2333 (World Literature
I or II) and one hour for PHED 1174 (Camping).
"I treat the literature part of it just like I do a normal class,"
Reed said. "Every day we have discussion on the books for English.
Jim Black, science teacher, lectures on geology."
The cost is $525 plus tuition; registration has already begun.
Required orientations start Wednesday, June 4.
