Sony releases games
(KRT) Soccer games may get short
shrift here in the United States, but Konami has just released a good
one for the Sony PlayStation 2 called Winning Eleven 6.
Touted as the most popular soccer title in the world,
Winning Eleven ($49; suitable for all ages) is a no-nonsense game for
purists who are more interested in commandeering a powerhouse European
squad than, say, the Dallas Burn.
There's such an extensive supply of game play and
managerial options that this title might intimidate anyone looking for
just a quick, simple match.
No worries. Although Winning Eleven isn't as user-friendly
as most sports titles, there's enough here to please both fair-weather
fans and hard-core aficionados.
Ball hogs don't do well in Winning Eleven, and you've
got to learn all the passes in order to dissect defenses. The game has
16 types of passes in the instruction manual, each executed with a slightly
different combination of button and directional pad presses.
Shooting at the goal is even harder. Most shots soar
majestically over the goalie's head and frequently look as if they would
clear the stadium altogether.
So train a lot because the computer more than holds its
own, even on the easier settings.
Of course, most gamers will probably want to play with
or against friends. Winning Eleven supports up to eight players on a
multitap adapter.
More determined gamers can delve into the management options,
which allow you to create, trade and train players, draft your own teams
and slog through tournaments.
Either way-with a little patience-you'll have a blast with
Winning Eleven 6.
