Hispanic Heritage Events


   Sept. 15-Oct. 2 NE Campus will display Border Studies, a photo exhibition on patterns of culture along the Texas-Mexico border. The exhibition, in Student Center North Hallway, includes maps showing border relocations.

Sept. 15-Oct. 15 Camino al norte/The Road North opens on NW Campus in the Student Center foyer. The exhibit includes photographs and stories about Don Juan de Onate's 1598 journey. The Texas Council for the Humanities Resource Center educational display provided the display.

Sept. 16 NW Campus will celebrate with a Diez y Seis fiesta grande. Ballet Folklorica Ollimpaxqui, a traditional dance and musical group from Mexico City, will perform. Students can purchase taco plates for a discount price of $3. Student activities will provide drinks.

Sept. 16 Harold Martina, a classical pianist, opens the SE Campus National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Roberson Theatre, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Born in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, Martina is a visiting artist at TCU's School of Music.

Sept. 16 Fiesta Day, sponsored by student activities and the Latino Student Union, kicks off the South Campus Hispanic Heritage Month activities. The day will feature food and entertainment with Danza Azteca and guitarist Roman Coranado performing on the Student Center SUB Patio, 12:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Sept 16-30 An art exhibit featuring Eduardo Aguilar, NW Campus associate professor of art, will be on display in the South Campus Library. A special reception to honor Aguilar and to open the exhibit is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Library Lounge.

Sept. 17 Ruben Navarrette, Jr., syndicated columnist with the Washington Post Writers Group, will present Bienvenidos to America: How Latinos Are Changing the United States-And You Along with It 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. in NSTU Center Corner on NE Campus. Lunch will be provided; call 817-515-6644 for required reservations.

Sept. 17 Eleno Orneales, Rangers coordinator of Spanish broadcasting, will discuss Latinos in Sports 9:30-11 a.m. in SRTA 132 on South Campus.

Sept. 24 SE Campus will hold a Fiesta 11:45 a.m.-2 p.m. in the North Ballroom. The event includes free food, entertainment and music. Among the performers are an Aztec dance group, mariachis and Kalpalli Tonai Teokalli.

Oct. 9 Ruben Martinez, nationally recognized author, will discuss his book Crossing Over 11:15 a.m.-12:25 p.m. in B118 on NW Campus. The book deals with Hispanic heritage and border issues. Martinez will remain after the presentation for a book signing.
