Presentation critical for job, speaker says
by Alina Cole

Presentation is the key to finding a good job, a career developer told NW students Oct. 14.
In Marketing Yourself, Shawn Ewing covered the appropriate steps to finding and keeping the job of choice.
She included personal motivation skills, appropriate dress, credible resume, first impressions and developmental skills for keeping the job.
Ewing, community outreach specialist for the Women’s Center, targeted college students in the process of moving out of college and into careers.
Students should find out what is right for them, Ewing said, asking questions about interests and the type of jobs that are suitable for each individual person.
“You should ask yourself ‘Does this environment interest me?’” she said.
Giving a step-by-step example of how an interview should go, Ewing guided students through the process from walking through the door for an interview to the proper way to answer interview questions.
She said students must thoroughly prepare for an interview.
   “Do your research,” she said.
Ewing told students to go into an interview with knowledge of the titles, descriptions and duties that the particular job requires.
Giving tips on how to make a better impression, Ewing told students to write legibly, saying that often times when deciding on a job candidate, employers will rule out the people with unreadable handwriting.
Ewing discussed appropriate interview attire for men and women.
“You can never go wrong with black or gray slacks,” she said.
Ewing told students to present themselves not only in an interview but also in the surroundings of a work environment.    Proper etiquette and body language are important, she said.
“Be mindful of your actions and your behavior,” she said.
