Campus video features artist
Maya Ying Lin, the artist who designed
and created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.,
is the final film subject of this year’s video trio produced by
the NE art department.
The video, a 90-minute biography, covers the most
profound events and works of her life up to present day, Karla Hyde,
NE instructional associate for art, said.
“As an accomplished sculptor, artist and architect
(Yale graduate), Lin’s work is subjective and appealing,”
she said.
Anitra Blayton, art, sculpture and drawing teacher
on NE Campus, enjoys Lin’s work.
“It is simple, emotional, focused and interpretable
on a broad basis,” she said.
According to Blayton, Lin was chosen as the third
artist in this video series for several reasons.
“Her style contrasts greatly with the two previous
artists,” she said.
According to Hyde, “Her art work is very different
and contemporary.”
Lin was also chosen, Blayton said, because of her
rise to success despite obstacles associated with her gender, a common
theme among all the female artists chosen for this video series.
Lin was selected out of hundreds of prestigious male
artists to design and carry out the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Wall, thereby opening a door for female sculptors to follow
her example and excel in the world of art as well, Blayton said.
“This video should open people’s eyes
to the process by which artists receive exposure to their work and also
admiration,” she said.
“It will also show the works of Maya Lin other
than the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and explain what she personally
had to go through to achieve her success,” she said.
The video on Maya Ying Lin is scheduled Tuesday, Nov.
4, at 2 p.m. in NFAB 194.
