Movie review
Scary 3 killing with yawns
by Rawly Bransom, Sports Editor
Only on rare occasions does a movie
come around that not only captivates the mind but lightens the soul
with laughter. Not only is Scary Movie 3 not that
movie, but it comes closer to going the opposite direction.
Anna Faris stars as Cindy Campbell, the star of all
three Scary movies. Charlie Sheen, Leslie Neilson, Queen Latifah and
many others star in this spoof of almost every movie possible.
At least seven different movies are spoofed: both
Matrix movies, The Ring, The Others, Signs, The Sixth Sense and 8 Mile.
Those are just the ones that I caught; there might have been more.
In the movie, a mysterious movie is killing people
(yes, right out of The Ring).
Cindy is raising a nephew who can see dead people
and knows what others are thinking (Sixth Sense).
At the same time, mysterious crop circles are appearing
on an ex-priest’s farm (Signs). Charlie Sheen plays the ex-priest/farmer.
His brother George (Simon Rex) is a wannabe rapper, who grew up on a
farm and can’t get his big break because he is white (8 Mile).
Many of the jokes are funny. The sight gags definitely
work well to a point. The biggest problem for the movie is those very
same sight gags.
In a movie that has no determinable plot, the movie must
be funny. I did laugh often during the movie; the problem was that the
very same gags that made me laugh also dragged on too long. Most of
the time what should have taken 30 seconds to a minute took maybe two
or three minutes. That is much too long for quick sight gags to stay
funny.
Viewers also face several reoccurring jokes running throughout
the whole movie. How many times can you run over one little boy, really?
All in all, Scary Movie 3 does deliver some laughs. If you
liked the other Scary movies, then you’ll really appreciate this
one. In comparison, this one is a diamond in a pile of coal.
If you have not seen the others or you did not like them,
expect puns, cheap sight gags and fart jokes. If that sounds like fun,
this is the movie for you.
