SE opera focuses on children

Globolinks will take over SE Campus
for Halloween when the SE opera workshop presents Help! Help! The Globolinks.
The children’s opera by Carlo Menotti, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 31-Nov.
1, will be directed by Marion Nesvadba.
Menotti is famous for his annually televised opera
Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Tricia Bowes, music major, plays a lead role—a young
girl forced to face invading aliens with a violin as her only weapon.
“This opera will be fun for Halloween. The idea that
aliens are taking over the world and can be stopped only by music is
out there and funny,” she said.
The first for the entire cast, according to Boles,
was not as difficult as some rehearsals in the past.
“The closer we get to show time, the more rehearsals
we have. Some may last three hours,” she said.
This contemporary opera contains comedy focused on the faculty
of a school. Nesvadba explained the intent of the workshop productions.
“We strive to do our best with operas; the main focus
Oct. 31 (Halloween) is kids. We take lines from other famous operas
and add them to ours jokingly, so those who are familiar with opera
are amused,” he said.
Nesvadba said SE Campus always tries to do an opera that
is entertaining to the audience.
The 24-person cast will give four shows: Friday and Saturday
at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Nesvadba said he purposely set the second performances
so children could come after they had finished trick or treating.
Nesvadba gave three reasons for people to attend.
“It’s a Halloween opera; it’s a safe place
to take the kids on Halloween, and it’s very entertaining and
inexpensive,” he said.
Tickets are $3 for adults, $1 for students and senior citizens
and free for anyone in costume.
