PTK sponsoring marijuana debates
Proponents and opponents of the
issues surrounding the legalization of marijuana will conduct a debate
via satellite later this month.
Sponsored by the National Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society,
Steven Hager and Robert Stutman will be the main debaters with Dr. Billy
Martin offering a nonbiased scientific perspective on the use of marijuana.
The debate, Heads vs. Feds: The Great Debate, will
be conducted via satellite Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. on all four
campuses.
The debate covers whether marijuana should be legalized
for medical and/or recreational use.
The panelists will discuss the physical and social
effects of marijuana and laws surrounding its use and possession.
Hager is the editor-in-chief of High Times magazine and
works to establish the counterculture as a legitimate minority group.
Stutman made a 25-year career as one of the country’s
highest profile DEA agents and is responsible for more than 15,000 arrests.
Martin is professor and chairman of the department of pharmacology
and toxicology at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The NE Campus will air the program in the Student Center’s
Center Corner, and repeat it Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 12:30 p.m. in the
Center Corner.
South Campus will show the program in the SSTU Student Forum
Room while the NW Campus will air the program in the Optimum Room in
B2.
The SE Campus will meet in the North Ballroom. Following
the satellite discussions, the Beta Delta Omicron Chapter will sponsor
a student panel conducting a symposium-style question-and-answer session.
Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year
College, and the National Collegiate Honors Council will produce the
program. This seminar is the final installment of a five-part series
Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.
