South sponsoring authors’ evening
From their lives to their books, three
African American authors will go face to face with students in the Evening
with Authors on South Campus Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Sponsored by the campus’ English department,
the event is second of such evenings since this summer in the department’s
continuous efforts to bring acclaimed authors to students on South Campus,
Dr. Ruth McAdams, department chair, said.
One of the authors invited is Jas. Mardis, an award-winning
radio commentator and recipient of numerous awards. Mardis received
the Pushcart Prize in 2000 and was the editor of Kente Cloth: Southwest
Voices of the African Diaspora, the first anthology of African American
writers from the Southwest.
Dallas author Yvette R. Blair will also speak at the event.
Her recently finished book, The Hoot and Holler of the Owls, is a compilation
of some of the best work by today’s emerging black writers, according
to an English department spokesperson.
The two authors will be joined by local writer Phyllis
Allen, who has received numerous literary awards. Allen is the 2003
winner of the Judy and A.C. Greene Literary Festival. She
also won the Kente Cloth Short Fiction Award in 1995 for her short story,
The Shopping Trip.
This free event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Rotunda on South
Campus. For more information, call 817-515-4562.
