WIN-R program to expand to NW
From reciting poetry to singing jazz,
participants at the kickoff for Women in New Roles program on NW Campus
will not only enjoy the entertainment but find out about an opportunity
that WINR coordinators say will help turn their lives around.
“We want [students] to know that they can do this
program,” Carol Hunsberger, WINR coordinator on NW Campus, said.
“This program can definitely change their lives.”
The event will be Tuesday, Nov. 11, 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the
Optimum Room.
With an aim of assisting low self-esteem women to succeed
through the transition of college life and well into the preparation
for their future careers, the 26-year-old academic program is planning,
for the first time, to expand its services on South, SE and NE campuses
to NW Campus.
The WINR program will be available on NW starting this spring,
and program officials say they hope the kickoff will help inform more
women who may benefit from the program.
Members go through WINR by taking two concurrent classes,
Applied Psychology and Human Relations, as well as attending workshops
and support groups. Graduates of the program then go on to become mentors
for new students in the program.
Tuesday’s event will open with a poem presentation
from the “Rapping Granny,” Alice Eldridge, who went through
the WINR program on South Campus at the age of 53.
At the event, participants will then meet with the team
facilitators made up of administration staff and faculty members. They
can learn about the history, missions and scholarship opportunities
in the program.
Some of the past WINR graduates will also present their
testimonials about how WINR has helped changed their lives.
“People who are interested in WINR will get a glimpse
not only of what the program is about,” Hunsberger said, “but
also of what their lives may be after WINR.”
