Collegian takes major honors
in state
The Collegian won General
Excellence and Sweepstakes honors at this year’s Texas Community
College Journalism Association convention.
The Collegian, ranked into Division I colleges,
competed against the largest of the community colleges in the state.
The Collegian won 12 awards, which gave it
the coveted Sweepstakes award for most points earned through awards.
It also won first place for general excellence.
Photo editor Keith Ludwick won first place in Feature
Photography and second place in Picture or Panel for his photos of Texas
Independence Day in the Fort Worth Stockyards.
“I’m proud,” Ludwick said. “These
are the first awards I have ever won for my photography, and I am very
proud of the honors.”
Last semester’s photo editor, Jamie Beck, won
second in Feature Photography for her picture “Fairy Artisan,”
third in News Photo for “Rubber Ducky” and third in Sports
Photo for “Dance.”
Photographer James Robert Jr. won first in News Photo
for “Campus Remembers” and second in Sports Photo for “Stuff
It.”
Connie Yu, managing editor, won second in In Depth
or Investigative for her stories on budget cuts.
Reporter Brian Shults, last year’s SE news editor,
won first place in News Writing for his story “Forum Changes.”
Reporter Derrick Ayers won third in Sports Feature
for his story “Former Athlete.”
The staff of The Collegian also received honorable
mention in Advertising, third place in Headline Writing and first place
in Layout and Design.
