Seminar to focus on abuse

Because of widespread domestic abuse, the Family Violence Prevention Project will sponsor a seminar Friday, Oct. 19, 9-11 p.m. on SE Campus

Pregnant young women and teens are likely targets of violence and domestic abuse, making homicide the leading cause of death to pregnant women.

“The effects of intimate partner violence during teen pregnancy represents the complex convergence of domestic violence, teen pregnancy and normal growth and development,” Sara Bishop, seminar instructor and assistant professor of nursing at Midwestern State University, said.

The seminar costs $20 and counts as two CNE contact hours for nurses, 0.2 CEUs for social workers and two clock hours for licensed professional counselors.

According to the Family Planning Program, approximately one in six teens reported some type of prenatal violence, with about one in 11 reporting severe violence.

All certified health officials under Section 261 of the Texas Family Code must report any suspicion of abuse to authorities.

Bishop’s seminar will focus on educating potential health professionals to recognize the signs of abuse, in order to comply with the law.
