Teams battle in basketball as Alexanders team wins all
by Jason Hollins, reporter
There is something about team sports that brings groups of people together.
When people from all walks of life meet on a basketball court and are able to play together in such a fluid manner, one might think they had been playing together for years and years.
Such was the case last Monday when 10 South Campus students squared off in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
Dane Watts led his team, the Balaz, against Lawrence Alexan-der's team in the opening round of the tournament.
From the start, Alexander's team was playing from behind. Watts was all over the court, scoring 18 points before the final buzzer sounded. He would need help from his teammates, however.
Ernest Holmes provided six points and was able to move the ball around well. Adrian Johnson added five points and most of the rebounds.
The Balaz took a 17-15 lead into halftime.
Every time they take it inside, I am going to burn them, Alexander said.
He would not be denied in the second half. Scoring 23 points, Alexander led his team to a come-from-behind victory 37-28.
Team three, known as the Shawty's, watched attentively the first game.
Team leader Bertram Pringle shouted encouragement to both teams, all the while looking for ways to exploit his next opponent.
When the game started, they lo
oked quick, so we had to take it to the post, Marcus Lewis said.
Take it to the post they did as Patrick Kalimy once again showed his power inside, scoring six quick points.
At least twice Kalimy found Alexander open in the corner for three-point shots that he connected on.
Shanon Taylor, the fourth member of the Shawty's, watched his team finish the first half from the bench, trailing 15-12.
Pringle had kept the game close with his three-point shot as the clock wound down.
Taylor entered the game in the second half for Pringle after giving helpful hints to his team during the break.
He seemed to provide a spark with his skillful shooting.
However, in the end, Alexan-der's team proved over powering, taking the game and the tournament 33-23.
