APT to demonstrate addiction treatment
A demonstration of an addiction/mental illness treatment based on acupuncture will be presented Friday, Oct 5, on NE Campus.
Sponsored by A Positive Today (APT) and the mental health program, Teresa Sawyer, a licensed chemical dependency counselor, will speak at 12:15 p.m. in ACB 101.
Acu Detox is a simple technique in combating brain bio-chemical disturbances.
Developed in the United States following initial discoveries in modern China, Acu Detox involves the shallow placement of a few very small acupuncture needles under the skin of the patients outer ear, according to the Acu Detox Information Center.
Patients usually feel little or no pain at the time of insertion. Many patients report feeling relaxed with increased energy and ability to focus mentally following the treatment. Treatment staffs report lowered rates of relapse with this therapy, according to an industry report.
Rather than a sole treatment, advocates say the technique should be used as part of a comprehensive program of care including counseling, education and mutual help groups.
All students are invited to attend the presentation and join APT.
Positive Attitudes Lending Smiles (PALS) t-shirts can be ordered at the meeting. Some PALS upcoming projects include a food drive, a helping project, possibly supporting Christs Haven for Children, and a toy and coat/clothing drive.
More details of these upcoming activities will be posted on bulletin boards around campus.
Interested students, faculty or staff also can call Dolores Sutter, department chair of mental health, at 817-515-6614.
