Area archeologists to bring forgotten times to NE Campus
by KC Jones, ne news editor
Visitors can step back in time when NE Campus presents the 2001 Metroplex Archeology Fair Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on the west lawn of the Student Center.
The archeology fair will provide several cultural and hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations for children and adults.
The free activities and demonstrations include artifact identification, pictograph drawing, spear throwing, corn grinding and pebble and face painting.
Chuck wagon refreshments will be available for purchase.
Dr. Clair Ossian, professor of geology, and the American Research Group in Egypt will have a tent to display the fun of ancient Egypt. The group will create cartouches known as hieroglyphics, for visitors.
Hieroglyphics is actually a Greek word that means sacred writings. It was the special writing style that was saved for extraordinary places like temple walls, he said.
In case of rain, as much of the fair as possible will be moved into the Center Corner in the Student Center.
The fair is a celebration of Texas Archeology Awareness Month. Tarrant County Archeology Society, Dallas County Archeology Society, Texas Historical Commission, the Council of Texas Archeologists and the Texas Archeology Society are sponsoring fairs and events across the state throughout the month of October.
The events provide an opportunity to discover past human cultures and learn about the historical significance of Texas archeological sites and the importance of historic and prehistoric preservation.
The state of Texas contains as many as two million archeological sites. Campsites of prehistoric hunters, ancient shipwrecks and Civil War sites are all part of the states heritage.
The Texas Historical Commission is the state agency for historic preservation. The agency administers a variety of programs to preserve the archeological, historical and cultural resources of Texas. A comprehensive list of community events through Texas is listed at www.thc.state.tx.us.
