Ballyhoo visiting Arlington theater

Theatre Arlington presents the Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Dramalouge Award-winning play, The Last Night of Ballyhoo Thursday through Feb. 19.

Author Alfred Urhy, who also wrote the popular Driving Miss Daisy, tells a spirited, engaging and thoughtful story of a Southern Jewish family living in 1939 Atlanta.

Ballyhoo takes place in the home of Adolph Frietag, his widowed sister, sister-in-law and their respective daughters, Lala and Sunny.

Lala’s life centers around the premiere of Gone With The Wind and, more importantly, finding a date for the last night of Ballyhoo, the formal dance that crowns the party season in Atlanta’s Jewish society.

Rivalry between cousins and suitors highlight the story, which also depicts life in the Jewish South. Ballyhoo also deals with the prejudice that existed between German-American Jews and “the other kind.”

B.J. Cleveland, director and artistic director for Theatre Arlington, features a cast of new faces as well as veterans.

Linda Much and Rex Bierko return as siblings, Boo and Adolph. Heather Hodnett returns as the movie-fanatic Lala Levy.

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Ticket prices range from $13-$15 with discounts available for students, seniors and groups.

Call the Theatre Arlington Box Office at 817-275-7661 for reservations and information.
