South open house to Catch the Dream
by Tiffany Davis, south news editor
Visitors can Catch the Dream at South Campus open house Tuesday, April 24, 7-10 p.m.
In the SUB free food and information will be available in a carnival-style atmosphere.
Daniel Chacon, dean of student development, anticipates reaching out to the community surrounding South Campus including 20 local high schools, business owners, neighborhood associations and churches.
Our goal is to get students, parents, grandparents and all who have an interest to achieve a higher education to join us for open house.
Whether their interests are in academics, non-credit courses, continuing education, technical courses, senior citizen program or financial aid, there will be information readily available for them, he said.
Representatives for all specialty programs, such as the automotive department and nursing department, will be available to speak one-on-one to prospective individuals during the open house.
We are offering free health information and some basic health screenings as well, he said.
The TCC police department will share information on drug and alcohol abuse.
Members of the Student Government Association (SGA) will devote their time to giving tours of various departments.
I would like for some of our current students to come out so that they can give information and advice to the audience from a students point of view, Chacon said.
We want people to be aware of our Academic Fresh Start program, Judith Gallagher, humanities division chairperson, said.
According to Rachel Johnson, registrar, the Fresh Start program gives students who were in school at least 10 years prior to their enrollment date at TCC to gain a fresh academic start on their grade point average and to remain TASP exempt.
