Teachers to credit service learning
The opportunity to improve a class grade through community service at SE Campus will be explained in Service Learning.
Led by Joan Sullivan, assistant coordinator of career and employment services, the seminar will be Wednesday, Oct. 17, 5:30-6 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 8, 10-10:30 a.m. in the North Ballroom.
Service learning provides students the chance to learn about productive community living while earning extra credit, she said.
The program operates on a point system that corresponds to volunteer hours served helping the community. The points are evaluated by the participating professor and may improve overall class grade or replace a low test grade. Specific advantages vary among professors, Sullivan said.
Currently five SE faculty members are involved with the Service Learning program, including Sharon Cassidy, Vince Lembo, Hector Menchaca and Michelle Shay.
During the seminar, I am discussing the procedures students will use to participate in the program, what volunteer positions are available and each professors extra credit point system.
Afterwards I will answer any questions and give students the contact information for community services, she said.
