Race issues topic of cultural forum

NE Campus Union for Cultural Diversity (UCD) will sponsor a campus forum, Re-writing the Language of Diversity: Race Issues in America, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center’s Center Corner.

In light of the current issues stemming from the Sept. 11 tragedy, UCD members believe that such a forum is vital.

Dr. James Varnado, counselor and professor of psychology, explained why it is important to hold this type of forum.

“Because it [race] is an issue that people in America emphasize, it has created a lot of differences. We need to move away from the negativity associated with [those] differences,” he said.

The forum will include a panel of students of various cultural backgrounds and faculty members. The audience participants can share their comments and questions during the forum.

Lori Jowell, assistant professor of sociology and UCD advisor, discussed what the group plans to accomplish.

“Students will be allowed to vent their pent up emotions and begin a process of healing,” she said.

Based on a platform of selected issues concerning American society, the purpose of the forum is to bridge the communication gaps between cultures and to eradicate stereotypical and biased beliefs, Jowell said.

Udochi Igbokwe, president-elect, said, “The forum will educate people about different cultures and help people to abandon stereotypical beliefs.”

The UCD hopes to create an atmosphere of understanding as well as a unified language of diversity.

According to its by-laws, the UCD is “a multicultural organization that openly embraces the campus’ diverse ethnic groups. The organization also promotes community and social involvement while maintaining an over-all theme of cultural awareness and acceptance.”

Anyone interested in attending the forum should contact Lou Davenport, student development coordinator, at 817-515-6644 or Amos McCluney, counselor and UCD advisor, at 817-515-6661 or visit ucdiversity.tripod.com for further information.
