Day’s work reduces time for enjoyment
by Chris Taylor, editor-in-chief

Being editor-in-chief sucks. Sorry for the language, but there is no better way to put it.

Sure, there’s the power, the girls and the celebrity, but there’s also the responsibility. I miss out on so many opportunities because of my position. I’ve missed great speeches, movie premieres and countless outdoor festivals.

We have some great activities put together by the student activities staff, and, yes, I get to enjoy some of them, but I always think of the ones I miss.

It makes me a bit of a pessimist, but I’m trying to enjoy my college career before it’s over. Playing a little volleyball at the ‘70s fest is fun, but playing for a couple of hours would be great.

I, unfortunately, have a fairly hectic life. I even quit eating breakfast in order to have an extra 15 minutes in my day.

I know most people probably think of the editor of a college newspaper riding around in limos with Jennifer Lopez, drinking champagne at the grand opening of the Hard Rock Café TCC and having people open my mail and even chew my food for me, but the truth is, it really isn’t like that at all.

Instead of a limo with Jennifer Lopez, it’s more like an AMC Gremlin and picking up some homeless guy named John, who mutters to himself about the leprechaun on his shoulder that tells him to burn everything.

   Pretty glamorous, huh?

I don’t hate the job of course; I would do it forever if I could. But sometimes there is a high price to pay for being eternally vigilant for rights and freedoms.

Okay, maybe not a high price, but I live on a pretty modest budget. So what if I don’t get to have fun for 15 minutes longer, right?

Still, it would nice to be part of the scene instead of above and beyond it.

Even a chronic nonconformist like I am enjoys the action occasionally. Besides, I need the exercise. It’s probably not a good sign when I run out of breath answering the phone.

But I chose this path. I will continue to sacrifice my fun for the First Amendment just so people can write and tell me how much of an idiot I am.

Besides, if they didn’t tell me, how would I know?
