New dean stresses successes

A big factor that contributes to student success is motivation, the new dean of student development services said in an informal chat with students last week.
The African American Student Organization sponsored a chat with Dean Dan Chacon as part of the African American Heritage Month events.
There is a significant number of students who drop out or don't attend. Many individuals lose sight of their goals for this very reason, he said
Chacon also spoke about the colleges Student Survival Series on South Campus and especially focused on time management
Learn to set your priorities in order with your goal in mind, he said.
With goals and priorities set, Chacon thinks that if an opportunity crosses a persons path, he will be more likely to recognize that opportunity and take advantage of it.
Plan ahead of time and learn to use all your resources wisely, he said.
Chacon talked about his years as a teacher and coach when he learned a great deal about teamwork and teambuilding.
It's very important for each of us to be critical thinkers and team players, he said.
He credits many of the skills and experiences that he encountered as great assets in his success in the student development area.
The dean also heard student concerns.
One major concern was the need for more wheelchair accessible entrances around campus.
Some other concerns were student worker wages and more money for student organizations.
The dean assured students that these concerns are being addressed.
Chacon also discussed the issue of registration and said a one-stop service center is being proposed to provide an easier and less stressful registration process.
The idea is to put all offices under one roof with all hands on deck, he said.
Chacon closed the session by saying, Money can't buy attitude. It comes from inside.
He reminded students to stay focused on goals and take advantage of each opportunity.
