Cultural diversity important aspect
by Sabrina Jordan, reporter

Now is the time of year we all get excited to open presents, drink eggnog and surround ourselves with loved ones.

Stockings are hung by the fireplace; Christmas trees are decorated and lit with lights, and we all begin to feel that Christmas spirit.

During this season, however, Christmas also becomes commercialized.

However, many people forget the reasons that make Christmas so special.

Sadly, during the holiday season, we’re all guilty of focusing on our own traditional way of celebrating Christmas and don’t stop to acknowledge other methods of celebration by those of different cultures.

In addition, our society with its many different cultures and traditions truly defines what America is—a melting pot.

We may be familiar with the birth of Jesus Christ, with St. Nicholas and with Hanukkah. Some may have heard of Kwanzaa or Ramadan, but we seldom know little about any celebration other than our own.

I challenge each and every reader to take a moment to acknowledge at least one culture besides your own this holiday season.

With the crisis our country has experienced these past few months, now is as good a time as any to embrace all cultures that make America what it is.

    United we stand.
