NW artists build earthen tribute

Everyone was impacted by the Sept. 11 tragedy in different ways. Some felt guilt, anger, sadness or, even in a few grim instances, joy at the tragic event.

People coped in various ways. Singers wrote songs. Artists painted works reflecting the day. Writers wrote poems and essays.
Even the recent U2 concert was obviously influenced by it.

TCC students have also found ways to express their feelings about and toward the people of New York City.

A NW Campus art appreciation class has constructed an earthwork representing the Sept. 11 event.

An earthwork is a piece of art made from things in the environment.

The students chose to construct a dove out of white rock to represent peace, love and remembrance.

According to Deirdre Pope, adjunct art instructor, students want it to represent “endings and beginnings in the Great Circle of Life.”

The students and faculty installed the work Sunday.

The earthwork will be on display on the west side of the front entrance of the Administration Building through Tuesday, Dec. 11.
