Faculty sponsor contest

Student writers can compete for cash prizes and a chance for publication by entering the Under the Clock Tower writing competition on NE Campus.

The journal originated in 1990 as a showpiece for student works, Cuyler Etheredge, assistant professor of English and faculty editor, said.

“This is the third annual writing competition on NE Campus,” she said.

Students may submit up to two essays, four poems and two short stories. Both the essays and short stories have a 2,500-word minimum requirement.

The manuscripts must be submitted both on paper and floppy disk in Microsoft Word by Monday, April 2. Manuscripts may be submitted to either the writing center, ACB 109, or the English department, FAC 336. A submission form must accompany each manuscript and may be obtained from the English department office or any English teacher.

The literature submitted will be selectively published in Under the Clock Tower, produced in the fall. The publication will contain more than just the contest winners and will include selections from all categories.

“Spring is the time that creative juices flow, so we hope students’ creativity is in full force,” Etheredge said.

Students may be rewarded for their creative efforts by winning $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place and $25 for honorable mention. Awards are across categories, and winners will be honored at the fall reception when the journal is released.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to receive recognition for their writing talents,” she said.
