District welcomes Mexican folklorist

     A folk singer/musicologist will be making appearances on campuses as part of the Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebration and Hispanic Heritage Month, commemorating Hispanic heritage and culture.
     Dr. Jesus “Chuy” Negrete will speak Thursday, Sept. 14, at 12:30 p.m. on South and 7 p.m. on SE. On Friday, Sept. 15, Negrete will be on NW at 10 a.m. and NE at 12:30 p.m.
     Heading up the Mexican Cultural Institute, Negrete is dedicated to the study of Mexican-American musicology, Chicano folklore, educational anthropology and the social problems concerning Mexican-American communities.
     The son of migrant farm workers, Negrete now lectures and performs for such schools as MIT, Harvard, Brown and Stanford.
     Negrete has won several awards, such as a 1998 Bannerman Fellowship, a Smithsonian Institute fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, the Stanford Humanities Award, the Rockefeller Foundation’s New Artists Award and an honorary doctrate from the ethnic studies department of the University of California at Berkley.
