Chancellor elected to Commission

Dr. Leonardo de la Garza, TCC chancellor, has been elected to an educational accrediting agency.

De la Garza was elected to the 77-member Commission on Colleges of the regional accrediting association, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in December.

Commissioners recommend membership standards and dues structure, conduct reviews and take final action on the accreditation of collegiate institutions, review reports from appointed study committees and oversee the work of the Commission’s administrative staff.

The Southern Association of Colleges is one of six regional accrediting organizations in the United States.

The Southern Association’s membership consists of more than 12,000 accredited public and private institutions from university level down to the pre-kindergarten level.

Founded in 1895, the Southern Association works with schools and colleges in 11 southern states from Virginia through Texas, in Mexico and the Caribbean and in Central and South America.

De la Garza has been the chancellor of the TCC district since May 1997.

He is also a member of numerous other state and national organizations and associations, including the Task Force on Development of a Technology Work Force for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
