Grande music to highlight month of appreciation

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Visión Andina, a Bolivian music group, will perform Wednesday, Sept. 19, 10:40-11:35 a.m. in the Roberson Theater.

The group will present ancient music from Bolivia, in the Aymara language, accompanied by traditional Andean instruments and wearing colorful hand-woven ponchos.

Instruments such as zampoñas, sikus, maltas, antaras, various sizes of pan pipes, quenas, quenachos and other ethnic flutes will be used in the performance.

A charango, a small ten-stringed instrument originally crafted from armadillo shells, will be featured, along with percussion instruments such as chajchas and a bombo.

The acoustic Spanish guitar will also be played in the special presentation.

In addition to traditional favorites, Visión Andina will play a selection from their album, Paisaje de Condores.

Jacco Velarde, a native of Bolivia and director of the group, formed Visión Andina in 1982. The other members include Juan Lima, Marcelo Sanjines, Pedro Velasco, Pastor Gutierrez, Oscar Valdez and Vilma Moreno. The members of the group reside in the metroplex and perform at various local venues.

Velarde performed at TCC last spring as part of a cultural festival held on the SE Campus.
