Help available for depressed

If a friend or relative says he or she is thinking of suicide, how should one help?

ThePortage Path Behavioral Health in Akron offers some do’s and don’ts:

-Do talk openly, directly and freely about suicide.

-Do allow for expressions of feelings and be a willing listener.

-Do offer hope that alternatives are available.

-Do get help from those specializing in suicide prevention and          remove the means of committing suicide.

-Don’t be judgmental. Resist debating whether suicide is right or    wrong.

-Don’t dare the person to do it.

   -Don’t act shocked.

   -Don’t be sworn to secrecy.

Two organizations offer more information and details on obtaining help for those in need.
