Horticulture students eligible for scholarships

A new scholarship program has been established for horticulture students enrolled on the NW Campus.
Steven McLaughlin of Greenscapes, president of the North Central Texas Chapter of the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association, announced the $5,000 scholarship.
Over a period of five years, two students enrolled in horticulture will be chosen each year to receive $500.
Mark Schusler, NW assistant professor of horticulture, was asked to submit three to four names of students enrolled in the program.
Qualified students must be majoring in horticulture and have experience in the field.
Also considered was the likelihood that students would stay and work in the DFW area and be potential members of the TNLA.
Passed in December, the program has already awarded a scholarship to Toby Guyer, horticulture major.
Hes a very good worker, Schusler said.
The scholarship was established in memory of N.E. Archie Jr. and his wife.
Archies Gardenland was founded by N.E. Archie Sr. in 1934.
Archie and his son built a nursery on Camp Bowie in Fort Worth, which is now in its 68th year of operation.
Schusler said the family is heavily involved in the horticulture program at TCC.
Archies has always been a supporter of the program, he said.
Many students have been employed at Archies, and several employees are graduates of the NW Campus horticulture program.
Getting young people interested in the beauty found in plant material was always one of the most important parts of Mr. and Mrs. Archies lives, he said.
