Honor society to issue invitations

All four TCC Phi Theta Kappa chapters will be mailing eligible students invitations to join the international honor society of the two-year college.

Phi Theta Kappa, the largest honor society in American higher education, is recognized as the official honor society for two-year colleges.

Bill Townson, NE chapter president, believes students should come first.

“My responsibility is to see that the students are taken care of. They need to know that Phi Theta Kappa membership has many benefits including scholarships, recognition, the cultivation of leadership skills, participation in service programs and opportunities for individual growth,” he said.

More than 400 senior institutions provide over $28 million in scholarships exclusively to Phi Theta Kappa members, many in the form of transfer scholarships.

All members are automatically recommended for inclusion in the National Dean’s List.

Dr. Van Parker highly recommends accepting the invitation to become a member.

“Since Phi Theta Kappa is respected by academia, membership makes a good entry on one’s resume,” he said.

Although the requirements can vary between chapters, a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work, earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and maintain a high cumulative GPA, generally 3.25.

Interested, qualified students must attend an orientation meeting arranged by the chapter of their choice.

SE Campus’s Beta Delta Omicron chapter will have two new member orientations for the students’ convenience: one on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 20, at 4:30 p.m. All orientations will meet in the North Ballroom. The fall induction will be Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the North Ballroom. A reception will follow in the Commons.

South Campus’ Rho Chi chapter orientations are Friday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. in the SUB Texas room. Fall induction will be Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. in RTA 132/133.

NW Campus’ Alpha Delta Delta chapter will offer four orientations: Thursday, Oct. 3, and Friday, Oct. 4, at 1p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in B118. Fall induction will be Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. in B118.

NE Campus’ Phi Tau chapter orientations will be Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 12:30 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center, Center Corner. Fall induction will be Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m.

Hiep Nguyen, NW chapter president, believes involvement is important.

“Kappans, current members, are encouraged to support their chapter by participating in service projects, fellowshipping with and mentoring new inductees or filling any openings as an officer,” he said.
