Injuries as key in fantasy football as on the field of play
by Chris Taylor, reporter
Perhaps the only thing one can count on in any fantasy sport is injuries.
An owner will hope for the best but always prepare for the worst.
That principle is what an owners draft strategy is based on: draft good players and make sure to have quality depth at each position.
The best fantasy teams are usually the ones that dont suffer many injuries and have the depth to cover them when they do happen.
However, when your best player goes down for essentially the entire season, then you are left scrambling to find a back-up.
Even worse, that injured player is taking up valuable roster space, Kurt Warner being the most recent example.
Warner is out anywhere from eight-10 weeks. If he is out eight weeks, then it might be a good idea to hang on to him, but if he is out 10, then maybe you should get rid of him.
The reason is because a typical fantasy football season lasts 14 weeks.
If War-ner is out 10 weeks, he will be back in time for the playoffs of your fantasy league. The key to that is getting to the playoffs without Warner. Not impossible, but difficult. If he is out eight weeks, then you have him for the last two games of the season, and then maybe the playoffs.
It could happen.
Injuries are a pain, but they are understandable. Suspensions are not.
Im speaking about Randy Moss here. Moss has already been a disappointment, and now he is facing a marijuana charge.
If convicted, Moss will receive a suspension from the NFL.
This latest situation is just more garbage from a player who has stated that he takes plays off, who has squirted an official with a water bottle and who tried to run over a parking officer with his car.
Moss is one of the few people that I refuse to draft for my sports teams.
I dont care what someone offers me; I will not even consider taking him.
And, its because he gets in trouble for stupid actions. Moss cant do my team any good sitting in jail or riding the bench because of a suspension. He is too big a risk for me to take.
And the guy should really feel lucky to be playing football in the first place. Sure, Moss is talented, but he wastes his talent with his arrogance and poor attitude.
Moss will eventually go away and, if were lucky, spend his life in prison.
But, more importantly, he should be jettisoned from your fantasy team before its too late. Try to get anything you can for him.
If not, you may end up with the most talented jailbird riding your bench.
