NE Campus Intramural Basketball

Game Over wins in narrow victory

Intramural basketball continued Monday, Feb. 12, on NE Campus with the Game Overs defeating the Kinfolk 42-39.

The scores ping-ponged back and forth in a close match for dominance.

The Kinfolk, coached by Jesse Morgan, had a strong lead on Game Over at halftime with a 21-17 score on the board.

At the end of the first quarter, Malcolm Jackson of the Kinfolk, said, “Everyone needs to stop being an individual and work as a team, but other than that we rock; it’s goin’ down!”

At the start of the last quarter, the Kinfolk were out on the court with a confident air about them as they dribbled circles around Game Over.
The last 20 minutes were as seat clenching as the first, with each team charging back and forth while points on the scoreboard steadily rose.

In the last four seconds, the Kinfolk were down by three when the team captain called a time out.

Minutes later, they were back on the court, and the Kinfolk had possession of the ball.

At three seconds with the clock counting down, a member of the Kinfolk leaped past the Game Over defenders and tossed the ball in hopes of scoring three points for his team.

The ball came short, and everyone watched it bounce off the court as the timer hit zero, ending the game. Game Over had a scare, but the end score was in their favor.

After the game, Mark Murdock, #14 of the Game Over team, talked about his teammates.

“We have a good starting five line up, good shooters and good runners who we can depend on,” he said.

As the teams left the court, Marty Martin, intramural director, commented on this year’s progress.

“The games are going pretty good," he said, “and the scores are going to get better the more the teams play.”

All teams go to the play-offs at the end of the season, but only one winning team will have the chance to compete against the champion basketball team on South Campus.

     Scrubs demolish Kinfolk in tourney

The Scrubs beat the Kinfolk 60-39 in NE intramural basketball Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The Kinfolk went through a dry spell in the the first half, enabling the Scrubs to convert on numerous fast breaks.

The game, though, was still in reach for either team with the Scrubs having a 26-17 lead.

The second half was a different story. The Kinfolk eventually got on a roll, but they could not cut down the Scrubs’ lead to closer than 17 points.

Shooters find success in Game Over battle

The Shooters took on the Game Over Friday in a sloppy, low-scoring game in intramural basketball on NE Campus.

The Shooters game won the game 38-34 thanks in part to late free throws in overtime play.

One spectator said this was the lowest scoring game this season.

The Game Over was true to its name. They looked flat and lacked energy.

The Shooters looked as if they came to win. They were energetic and had fun during warm up. In a game with more than 23 turnovers, ball handling was non-existent by both teams.

The Shooters moved out to an early lead and were up by as much as 10 in the first half.

However, the Shooters were unable to pull away from Game Over because of the three-point shooting and rebounding of Phillip Paraway, who nailed three three-pointers in the first half, keeping the score close.

At half time the Shooters were ahead 25-18. At the beginning of the second half, the Shooters came out flat and looked tired. They were unable to capitalize on their lead because of poor shot selection.

The shooters then saw their lead dwindle to nothing by scoring only 7 points in 20 minutes of basketball. Game Over took good shots and, for the first time in the entire game, played good defense.

Game Over came out looking to win in the second half, but turnovers and missed free throws and lay-ups kept them from taking the lead.

Paraway tied the game with 1:40 to go by making his fourth three-pointer of the game.

The game went into overtime tied at 32.

The two-minute overtime was dominated by the Shooters’ luck. They made free throws and a lay up and showed they had an idea of what defense was.

Brandon Muise of the Shooters led both teams in scoring with 13 points; Paraway led Game Over with 12 points from three-pointers.

Following the game, the Shooters stand one and one, and Game Over is one and two.

Only a couple of weeks remain in the basketball season with games Mondays and Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and Fridays at 12:30 p.m.
